In the future, beech wood fibers are to be used as a component of climate-friendly brick insulating materials. The concept of the pilot plant funded by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) is based on the findings that are being investigated and evaluated on a laboratory scale at the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research, Wilhelm-Klauditz-Institut (WKI). The work goals include the development of a process for defibration and further processing, e.g. calamity-damaged beech wood into a flexible fiber mat or a wood foam as a filler. The water absorption, fire and smoldering behavior of the insulating material is supposed be optimised. Various technical processes are being investigated for filling the bricks with fiber insulation mats or wood foam or foam granules made of beech.
