Even though relationships between EU and Russia are still slightly downhill, the ongoing green energy trend keeps European pellet imports from Russia rather active. Just in a year Russian pellets supplies to the EU countries substantially grew both in volume and value terms.

Thus, according to Eurostat data, in H1/2015 EU imported 16% more pellets from Russia in terms of volume than in H1/2014, with the Russian pellet supplies having come up to 364,608 tons. There was a sizable growth in value terms as well. EU imports of the Russian pellets increased by 14% in H1/2015 year-on-year and amounted to 46.9 million euros.

Top-5 Russian pellet importing EU countries in H1/2015 were: Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Italy and Finland.

In H1/2015, Denmark's imports - the leading EU importer of Russian pellets - decreased in volume by 11% year on year, with the total imports going down to 149,470 tons (H1/2014: 167,355 tons). It is notable that despite the decrease, Danish imports of the Russian pellets still constitute almost a half of the total EU pellet imports from Russia.

Germany’s imports of Russian pellets grew in terms of volume by 309% to 27,108 tons and amounted to 3.15 million euros (+247%). Germany’s imports of Russian pellets were lower than those of Denmark and Sweden due to rather strong domestic pellet industry.
