Jan Kurth, Managing Director of the Associations of the German Furniture Industry (VDM / VHK), commented on the current coronavirus restrictions in Germany as follows:

“The decision to declare Maundy Thursday and the Saturday before Easter to be non-working days is deeply remote from the economy and unacceptable. Due to the extremely short-term elimination of these production days, the production and supply chains in the German furniture industry are significantly impaired, which results in corresponding economic damage. Networked and internationally active industrial companies cannot be switched on or off at will. In addition, this does not have any positive effects on the infection process, as the companies strictly adhere to the hygiene measures and regularly test their employees.

We also very much regret that with the unimaginative implementation of the emergency brake in regions where the 7-day incidence per 100,000 inhabitants has risen to more than 100, the possibility of shopping in retail by making an appointment in advance (Click & Meet) is being withdrawn. Click & Meet has proven itself as an instrument for low-contact shopping under secured hygiene conditions in the furniture trade and after ten weeks of trade closure it has contributed to an initial stabilization in our industry.
