Germany has further expanded its European top position in pellet production in 2020 with over 3 million t for the first time - namely 3.1 million t (+ 10%). Consumption nationwide in 2020 was around 2.33 million t. According to preliminary figures, the export surplus was around 473,000 t.
And according to the German Energy Wood and Pellet Association (DEPV), sales of suitable heating systems also rose by 78.5%. This means that 546,000 pellet firing systems were in operation in Germany at the end of 2020. For the year 2021, the DEPV expects a further increase in sales and an increase in the expansion of pellet firing systems by a good 10% to around 70,000 systems, around a third of which are pellet stoves.
As usual, the price for pellets was stable and cheap in 2020 - even lower than in the previous year. On an annual average, heating operators paid € 237.28 for a ton of pellets.
