Germany: Spruce log price index falling for short lengths

Alternativtext In January 2022, the German producer price indices for spruce only partially continued the upward trend that had been going on since March. On average, the index for logs rose by 0.4% compared to the previous month to a level of 95.1 points. B grades recorded a minus of 0.2% to 98.2 points, to which 3 m lengths contributed with -1.1% to 98.3 points. 4/5 m lengths also increased by 0.4% to a level of 100.8 points.

C ranges fell by 1.1% to 87.5 points. 3 m lengths recorded a minus of 2.5% to 91.7 points. 4/5 m lengths increased by 1% to 93.7 points.

Alternativtext Spruce pulpwood rose in January by 5.9% to a value of 81.1 points. Douglas fir pulpwood increased by 3.7% to 59.2 points. Pine pulpwood recorded an increase of 7.1% to 84.3 points. The softwood pulpwood index increased by 6.3% to 80.8 points.

Year-on-year the spruce index increased by 53.9%. B qualities recorded an increase of 38.5%, with 3 m lengths contributing 37.5% and 4/5 m lengths 37.7%. C grades gained an average of 51.7%, with 3m lengths up 54.6% and 4/5m lengths up 53.1%. And the index for spruce pulpwood was 75.2% higher than in the same month last year.
